A long, steep gravel driveway led to the discovery of an incredible salvage project. Found deep in the bushes on a property that resembled a hoarder situation, this classic bulldozer was trapped, having sat dormant for perhaps a decade, with a maple tree growing right through its winch cable. Expert eyes quickly identified the machine and began assessing the damage and required repairs.
Identifying the 1950 Cat D47U Model
What collectors found was a vintage Cat D4, specifically a 1950 D47U model, confirmed by the 7U9201 serial number. This machine had logged approximately 10,040 hours. Modifications include a very nice adjustable blade, featuring height and angle adjustments.
Specs of the D47U Dozer
A 1950 Caterpillar D47U runs a four cylinder D315 diesel engine producing roughly forty to fifty horsepower, paired with a five speed transmission and steering clutches that drive the tracked undercarriage. Operating weight sits near six tons in standard form, with blades, winches or forestry guards adding more mass. Many machines from this era carried adjustable blades and Hyster winches, making the D47U a versatile workhorse in both construction and woodland jobs.
Initial Problems Found During Inspection
Initial inspection revealed multiple critical problems needing immediate attention. Most concerning was finding diesel fuel had flooded the crankcase because the fuel shut off had been left open, allowing fuel to flow naturally downhill from the tank. Radiator fluid levels were low, and the interior appeared rusty.
Fun fact: Poison oak was a hazard during the inspection. Another detail noticed was the heavy duty rollover protection, suggesting this D4 may have been equipped with a specialized forestry package.
Work on this 1950 Cat D47U is clearly just beginning. Hearing the crunch of the tracks as the rig is finally pulled free, seeing the ingenuity involved in solving the clearance problems, and experiencing the real pace of the recovery are moments best left for the screen.
